Tom Heilmann and Chris Ekman formed the firm in 1988. Although Mr. Heilmann ceased the daily practice of law in March 2016, he continues to regularly consult with members of the firm.

Mr. Heilmann earned his undergraduate degree from the College of the Holy Cross in 1968 and graduated from the Villanova Law School in 1971. Mr. Heilmann's litigation practice concentrated on civil litigation matters including commercial disputes and the representation and defense of attorneys, architects, engineers, real estate brokers and accountants in professional liability claims. He had an active real estate and commercial transactions practice and represented various real estate-related associations and firms.  Mr. Heilmann and the firm have an "AV" rating from Martindale-Hubbell and national lawyer's rating publication has named him to its list of Best Lawyers in America for his work in the areas of real estate and business litigation.

Mr. Heilmann successfully argued the case of Greenmoss Builders, Inc. v. Dun & Bradstreet before the United States Supreme Court.
